By: Sabrina Potter  April 05, 2024

Team USA finishes day two of the Pan American Track Cycling Championships with gold medals in the Men’s and Women’s Team Pursuit, and Women’s Elimination Race.

The morning of day two was all about Women’s Sprint and Men’s Keirin. Emily Hayes (Rock Hill, S.C.), Kayla Hankins (Scottsdale, Ariz.), and Mandy Marquardt (Allentown, Pa.; Team Novo Nordisk) represented Team USA in the Women’s Sprint Qualifying race. Moving into the 1/8 Final race, Hayes won her heat. In Heat 8, Team USA teammates Hankins and Marquardt went head-to-head to battle it out for the advancing spot to the 1/4 Final – Marquardt took the win.

Dalton Walters (Dallas, Texas) and Evan Boone (Phoenix, Ariz.) represented Team USA in the Men’s Keirin. Neither qualified through the first round and had to race the Repechage. Both riders narrowly missed the cut to move on to the evening session’s Semi-Final. Only the top two riders were taken from each heat with Walters finishing third and Boone fourth in their respective races.

It was an action-packed evening session that included: Women’s Sprint 1/4 Finals, Men’s Keirin Semi-Finals and Finals, Men’s Team Pursuit Finals, Women’s Team Pursuit Finals, and Women’s Elimination Finals.

While the Women’s Sprint 1/4 Final was well-fought by both Emily Hayes and Mandy Marquardt, ultimately, riders from Team Canada, Team Mexico, and Team Colombia would be moving on to Friday evening’s Semi-Final.

Team USA went into both the Men’s and Women’s Team Pursuit Final holding the top qualifying spots and did not disappoint. Both teams maintained their momentum, focus, and rhythm to take home the gold medals. The Men’s team included: David Domonoske (Palo Alto, Calif.), Anders Johnson (Huntsville, Utah), Grant Koontz (Nederland, Colo.; Star Track Cycling), and Brendan Rhim (Norwich, Vt.; Project Echelon Racing). Team USA battled against Team Colombia winning with a time of 3:56 in the gold medal round. Team Canada would take the bronze medal.

The Women’s team of Olivia Cummins (Fort Collins, Colo.; DNA Cycling), Emily Ehrlich (Greenville, S.C.; TWENTY24 Pro Cycling), Colleen Gulick (Long Beach, Calif.; Team Skyline), and Bethany Ingram (Warrington, Penn) rode to victory over Team Canada with a time of 4:23. Team Mexico took the bronze.

The Women’s Elimination Race rounded out the night with a somber beginning. Following an unfortunate crash shortly after the start, the race was neutralized while medical personnel tended to impacted riders on the track. After the restart, Jennifer Valente (San Diego; TWENTY24 Pro Cycling) powered through to victory, winning her second gold of the week. Juliana Londoño David of Team Colombia claimed silver, and Yareli Acevedo Mendoza of Team Mexico took the bronze.
